Choosing to take a martial arts class can be an exciting yet intimidating first step in your martial arts journey. Though you’ve figured out the martial art you want to learn, the school you want to learn, and your motivation to get started, there are a few things to take into consideration. Take a look at some ideas of what to know before your first martial arts class:
You’re going to get a workout.
Though you may be used to workout classes like HIIT or CrossFit, don’t discount the physical element of a martial arts class. You may use muscles that you’re not used to using, and you shouldn’t be surprised if you’re sore the next day! You also may come away with some bruises and scrapes, but it’s all part of learning and getting better!
You’ll meet people.
Part of the appeal of martial arts is its sense of community. When you join a martial arts class, it’s very possible that you’ll introduce yourself at the beginning of class, and you may have a partner to work with during. Don’t be shy, and once you open yourself up to meeting new people and making friends, you’re certain to feel more involved in the class and less likely to miss classes moving forward!
You’re going to do great.
Often, when starting a new workout plan or sport, we have a preconceived notion of what someone who does that workout or sport should look like. Martial arts is meant to be universal, and whether you’re tall or short has no bearing on your potential. Just go in with an open mind and you’ll learn the ways that you can excel as yourself!
