As humans, we like to feel like we’re making progress. This is why when you set a goal for yourself, and you’re able to see it through to success, it feels pretty good.
Whether it’s the beginning of a new year or getting started with forming a healthy habit, we can plan and execute on the goals that will help us move forward in our chosen path.
Here are just a few tips to help you set goals in any area of your life – martial arts, fitness, nutrition, lifestyle, etc.
1. Be Realistic.
When setting goals, picture an imaginary line between challenging yet still achievable and impossible. The key to creating realistic goals is to get as close to that line as possible without stepping into the realm of the impossible. You want to push yourself while not setting yourself up for failure. How do you figure out what’s realistic? Think back to your past experiences with goal-setting. Your history of success can help you figure out what you might be capable of accomplishing in the future.
2. Measure Your Progress.
When creating a goal, make sure you’ve defined it so there is a way to measure your progress. For example, if your goal is to “get better at martial arts,” it would be tough to measure your progress. How do you know when you’ve gotten better? Create some specifics around your goal by choosing a specific martial arts skill or belt rank to work toward. And then measure and track your progress.
3. Prioritize What’s Most Important.
We often fall into a trap where we want to accomplish all the things in a short period of time. But when everything is a priority and important, it can lead to exhaustion and depletion of willpower and motivation. To stay on track, prioritize your goals based on what’s most important to you right now. Move your lower priority goals to the back burner for now.
