Bring-a-Positive-Growth-Mindset-to-Martial-Arts-Ascendant-Martial-ArtsWhen you approach a task or activity with a growth mindset, you believe that you can get better and improve. And believing you can get better brings more positivity to your approach.

On the other hand, when you have a fixed mindset, you tend to approach things believing that your chances of improving are limited. You think that your abilities have a ceiling, and once you’ve reached it, you will no longer improve.

Sticking with martial arts long-term and reaping the benefits of all your hard work takes a growth mindset. Here are a few ways that you can bring a positive growth mindset to your martial arts training:

1. Focus on the process more than an outcome.

A growth mindset is more about focusing on the learning process than a future outcome. Even if your goal is to win a competition, earn a black belt, or become the best grappler in the world, you need a plan to get there. Rather than basing your success on an outcome that’s out of your control, make the process your intention and commit to continuous learning. With hard work and consistent practice, the improvements will come.

2. Pay attention to how you talk to yourself.

One way to get a better understanding of your mindset is to pay attention to how you talk to yourself. What chatter is going on in your head as you walk into a class, warm-up, and get started with rolling or sparring? You might find that you spend quite a bit of time saying some negative things to yourself. If so, before you step onto the mat, take a few deep breaths and make some space in your mind.

3. Avoid comparing yourself to others.

Sometimes it’s hard, but try to avoid comparing yourself to others. Martial arts is such an individual journey. Sometimes a skill you find to be extremely difficult is easy for someone else. But we all have a different experience. Rather than letting comparison lead to feeling frustrated or disappointed in yourself, stay focused on your personal growth.
